What are the Pro’s and Con’s of CO2 (R744) as a Refrigerant?

The average global temperature is predicted to rise between 1.5 and 4.5K in the next 100 years. The principle cause of global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere. Refrigeration systems are one of the contributors …

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a natural refrigerant?

Natural refrigerants are naturally occurring & are not synthetic like traditional refrigerants such as HFC’s (hydrofluorocarbon’s). HFC’s contain fluorinated gas that have a significant impact on global warming and the greenhouse effect. Natural refrigerants are environmentally sustainable, climate friendly and crucial to make strides in achieving carbon reduction targets.

Contact Climadesign at support@climadesign.co.uk for more information on how we can assist you to reduce your carbon footprint by using natural refrigerants.

    What is heat reclaim?

The refrigeration cycle and the process of cooling results in excess energy typically being rejected into the atmosphere via an air-cooled heat exchanger.  Heat reclaim looks to capture this energy and heat for other and useful purposes, such as hot water generation or space heating. Heat reclaim can be used to supplement existing heat sources, reducing energy bills and now is increasingly being evolved as a primary heat source.

Contact Climadesign at support@climadesign.co.uk for more information on how we can assist you to reduce your energy usage by retrofitting heat reclaim into your refrigeration & cooling systems.

    What is a heat pump?

A heat pump simply moves thermal energy (heat) from one place to another like the process of refrigerating & cooling however a heat pump releases heat into the conditioned space rather than the atmosphere. In simple terms when comparing to the traditional refrigeration cycle the condenser is now internal and the evaporator becomes external. Heat pumps generally draw heat from the cooler external air (air source heat pump) or from the ground (ground source). Heat pumps use electricity but also draw heat from these other sources to increase performance & efficiency levels especially when compared to normal heating methods using electricity, oil or gas. The UK has committed legally to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 & the committee for climate change has stipulated no new homes will be connected to the gas network, so our homes & buildings will need to be heated with heat pumps.

Contact Climadesign at support@climadesign.co.uk for more information on how we can assist you in developing & specifying heat pumps for your home & buildings.

    What does TEWI stand for?

TEWI is an abbreviation for Total Environmental Warming Impact and is used as a measure to calculate and compare greenhouse gas emissions between varying refrigeration, cooling and heat pump systems. The total impact is calculated over the lifetime of the system and considers direct emissions (from leaks, servicing, decommission of that system) and indirect emissions (emissions associated to running the system inclusive of the energy cost/ electricity required).  TEWI calculations are a key method to ensure investment choices meet clients carbon reduction aspirations.

Contact Climadesign at support@climadesign.co.uk for more information on how we can help you access your systems and environmental impact
